frequently asked questions

What is kh-flagwaver?

kh-flagwaver is a free browser-based 3D waving flag simulator by Kharta Mapping. It lets you preview a flag image with adjustable cloth, wind, pole and scenery.

How does it relate to the classic open-source FlagWaver?

The classic open-source FlagWaver is a flag-waving tool by krikienoid. kh-flagwaver is a separate Kharta Mapping tool with two-sided flag images, shaped flags, cloth choices, pole and scenery options, and PNG, GIF and video exports. Try the original at https://krikienoid.github.io/flagwaver/.

What do dexter and sinister hoisting do?

In this simulator, Dexter leaves the flag image unflipped horizontally; Sinister mirrors it horizontally. The separate Orientation selector rotates the design.

What does half-mast mean?

Half-mast means flying a flag below the top of its pole, commonly as a sign of mourning. Here it lowers the flag on vertical or leaning poles; horizontal mounts ignore this option. Follow the applicable flag protocol for real-world use.

Can I use my own flag image?

Yes. Upload an image through File or load an HTTP or HTTPS image URL through Web. Remote images must allow cross-origin access. Two-sided mode accepts a separate back image. Local uploads stay in your browser and are not included in share links.

How do I export a waving flag as a GIF or video?

Open Actions and choose GIF or 5s video. GIF export captures 36 frames at 480 pixels wide, about 3.6 seconds. Video records for 5 seconds and uses WebM or MP4 depending on browser support. PNG offers screen-size, 1080p and 4K snapshots.

Can I embed it on my site?

Yes. Use https://kh-flagwaver.com/?embed=1 as an iframe source. To embed your settings, add ?embed=1 before the # in a copied share link. Embedded views include a link back to the full simulator.

Is it free?

Yes. The simulator is free to use in your browser, with no account required. Flag and emblem use may still be subject to local rules and artwork restrictions; see the library credits.

Which cloth looks most realistic?

There is no single choice for every flag. Nylon is the default. Silk is lighter and softer, polyester is heavier than nylon, cotton and canvas are heavier and stiffer, and Shag adds a thick-haired surface. Choose the material that matches the flag you want to show.

How does wind speed map to the Beaufort scale?

Speed is stored in metres per second. The Beaufort display approximates the level by rounding (speed / 0.836) to the power 2/3, capped at 12. Selecting a Beaufort level uses 0.836 × level to the power 1.5 m/s, capped at 120 km/h. This is an approximation, not a table of official speed bands.
